2023-2024 Researcher Spotlight
Dr. Taryn Grieder
Dr. Grieder had been at the University of Toronto since 2000, first as an undergraduate on the Scarborough campus where she studied neuroscience and biology, and later as a doctoral student at the Institute of Medical Science.
Right after her Master’s degree, Grieder landed an undergraduate sessional lecturer position at U of T teaching synapse neurobiology and the neuroscience of behaviour. Ryerson University also offered her two courses as an instructor, and she kept a staff scientist role with her PhD supervisor, Derek van der Kooy, a Professor in U of T’s Department of Molecular Genetics and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.
Dr. Grieder's interest is in the neuropsychology of addiction. "I have shown there is a neural connection between the brain’s stress and reward systems during a drug addicted and withdrawn state using animal models. I am currently working on a community-based research project investigating the effectiveness of Neural Network Therapy® as well as psychedelically assisted therapy in the treatment of trauma and addictions, as well as the impacts of gratitude journaling on mental health and life satisfaction.
Dr. Taryn Grieder is a mom of three, a sports enthusiast and she owns a kayak & SUP rental company called Liftlock Paddle Co in Peterborough.
